An Encore Is a Choice Within the Show’s Remaining Time

The audience calls for another song, but the next act is already waiting and the stage manager is watching the clock. An encore may feel spontaneous to the crowd while still depending on practical decisions made before the show.

Know what time is actually available

Confirm the set’s finish time with the organiser and distinguish it from the time you would like to finish. Include any agreed changeover, announcements and technical requirements. Do not assume enthusiastic applause creates extra time in a venue’s operating conditions.

Choose an optional song that the whole band and crew know. Check its instrumentation, tuning and playback needs. A short familiar number may be easier to deliver cleanly than an ambitious piece that requires several minutes of rearranging equipment.

Agree on a visible decision

Decide who confirms whether the encore can happen and how that message reaches the performers. A clear cue from the stage manager is more useful than several band members independently interpreting gestures in a dark room.

For an illustrative festival set, the band might prepare a three-minute option but only play it after an agreed signal. If the running order has slipped, the main set’s closing song remains the ending. The audience still receives a deliberate finish rather than a hurried argument on stage.

Protect the final impression

Practise the transition back onto the stage or into the extra song, including the final stop and acknowledgement. If there is no time, thank the audience clearly and leave the ending intact. An encore is not compulsory proof that a performance succeeded.

After the event, compare the planned and actual set durations. Note which introductions or transitions took longer than expected. That information helps the next show feel relaxed without relying on borrowed minutes from another act. The strongest extra song is one the performers can deliver well and the event can genuinely accommodate.
